New research shows that you no longer have to exercise in that crowded gym, engage in joint-jolting workouts like jogging that can leave you crippled in old age, or limit yourself to working only a single part of your body per workout, as with kayaking or biking.

In fact, this research shows that you can:

  • Burn up to 1,125 calories per hour
  • Strengthen your entire body at once
  • Get slimmer faster than with jogging
  • Be less likely to be injured and
  • Get a sexy tan (hopefully) while doing it!

Think it sounds hard? What if I told you all you have to do is grab a paddleboard and head out for a nice, body-recharging Stand Up Paddle session?

That’s right guys: you can totally get that beach body while enjoying the sun, wind, waves and a 360-degree view of nature.

Just check out this infographic  comparing the different types of SUP activities with the intensity levels of other sports.

One of the best parts? The core-workout aspect of stand up paddle boarding. According to surf legend and fitness and nutrition geek Laird Hamilton, the most important part of your body to keep strong is your core, especially if you’ve had back injuries.

According to Laird Hamilton:

“When your back goes out, you’re out of commission. I give it relief with stretching and inversion, and strengthen it with core work and stand up paddle boarding.”

One lady, Karine, was prescribed paddleboarding after being in pain for ten years after back surgery. She recovered almost completely in a matter of months, just from the core strength and conditioning she received from SUP.

So as you can see, not only can you use stand up paddleboarding to achieve your fitness goals, with regular practice it can help keep you pain-free and injury-free for years to come.

And, you will have a LOT of fun while you’re doing it! (Click here for a more complete list of the fantastic benefits of SUP).

As you can see from the infographic above, there are SUP activities for every taste.

Whether you prefer the balance-focused exercise of doing yoga on the board (this takes some skill!) the intensity of racing to the buoys and back, the adventure sport of SUP surfing, or just want the simple pleasure of a regular, leisurely paddle, what you do with your SUP session is completely up to you.
